FESTIVALS IN SABAH

Sabahans observe a number of holidays and festivals throughout the year. Every ethnic groups celebrate their own festivals and the culture of open house (rumah terbuka) with the visits of families and friends from other races and religion are very well received especially with the interracial marriage between different ethnic groups of different background.


Kaamatan Festival

The Pesta Kaamatan is a traditional festival that has been passed down through generations among the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic group in Sabah. It commemorates the 'Bambazon,' which is a reverence for the 'Spirit of Padi' or rice. This festival is also one of the most popular celebrations among the people of Sabah. Pesta Kaamatan is held annually and is celebrated throughout the month of May, with the peak of the festivities occurring on May 30th and 31st each year.


Regatta Lepa

The Lepa Regatta Festival was introduced in 1994 and has been held annually in the month of April. Initially celebrated only at the district level in Semporna, it later expanded to become a state-level event in Sabah. In 2003, the festival was included in the 'Pesta Air Malaysia' calendar and subsequently became one of the annual events for the entire nation of Malaysia.


Corn Festival

The Corn Festival is a 2-day celebration filled with corn-related activities such as corn industry exhibitions, corn competitions, traditional sports which may or may not involve corn. The highlight of the event is the Maize Beauty Queen Pageant held on the second day, featuring local beauties decorated with corn-derived jewelry.


Sago (Rumbia) Festival

Sago Festival, or Pesta Rumbia is one of the festivals in Sabah, celebrated annually in the Kuala Penyu district of Sabah. The festival was introduced to appreciate the Rumbia tree, which is a key plant for the Kuala Penyu district and plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of the local population in that area.
